A team approach to managing skin cancer in Somerset West

Good news for patients diagnosed with skin cancer in Somerset West  and surrounding areas. Dermatologist, Dr Altaaf Parker and Plastic Surgeon, Dr Rory Dower have joined forces to provide a timeous, multi-specialist service. They support patients with skin cancer in Somerset West and the surrounding Winelands region of the Western Cape.

The Winelands Skin Cancer Clinic’s Principles of Care

Dr Dower obtained both his MMed (Plast Surg) and FC Plast Surg (SA) before going on to complete two international fellowships in microsurgery- The first at St Thomas’ hospital in London and the second, at the China Medical University Hospital in Taiwan.

During his specialist training, APRSSA awarded Dr Dower Best Clinical Paper in 2009 and 2011, as well as Best Publication in 2012. He has also presented at the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS) Annual Meeting in 2014, on breast reconstruction.

“The primary goal when treating skin cancers is to remove the tumour in it’s entirety, while preserving as much of the healthy tissue as possible. Fortunately, advances in plastic surgery mean that we have many options when it comes to reconstructing the residual tissue loss, keeping patients safe, and providing minimal disfigurement”.

Dr Parker has a keen interest in the early diagnosis and management of skin cancer. He completed his medical degree at the University of Cape Town thereafter specialising in dermatology at the University of Stellenbosch and qualified summa cum laude in his year of graduation. He has previously been an executive committee member of SHAWCO health and the UCT Surgical Society and is currently an executive committee member of the South African Society for Dermatologic Surgery. He currently holds a masters in medicine and is a fellow of the college of dermatologists of South Africa.

“Advances in dermatology have allowed for the very early detection of skin cancer, often when lesions are only millimetres thick. Using these methods, patients can be treated early with the most minimally invasive procedures possible allowing them to return to their daily activities with the least possible down time .“
